The filtration system is the heart of swimming pool water quality. It’s running—or should be running—every day, scrubbing out fine particles, dead algae, and other contaminants out of the water to keep it clear and hygienic for swimming to be fun and safe. In Dubai’s challenging climate, where algae growth is rapid, evaporation is intense, and airborne dust loads are heavy, a properly specified and sized filtration system is not optional. It is the basis for all else.
In Dubai, swimming pool builders who understand their hydraulics and filtration technology can specify systems that reliably keep the water clean all year round. When contractors undersize their systems, buy inferior equipment, or improperly design the plumbing, they create problems that are costly and disruptive to resolve after the pool is up and running.
Green Creation designs and installs filtration systems that are properly engineered for each individual pool—providing clients with the assurance that their water quality will be consistently maintained year-round.
UNDERSTANDING FILTRATION FUNDAMENTALS
The primary purpose of a pool filtration system is to remove suspended particulates from the water. These include fine particles that cloud the water and organic debris that would otherwise decompose in the pool and increase the chemical demand. Pool pump: The pool pump is used to constantly move water from the pool through the filtration system. Water is drawn from the pool through the skimmer (which catches surface debris) and the main drain (which draws from the bottom) and is pushed through the filter medium and returned to the pool through the return inlets. The water passes through the filter medium, trapping particles. An important design parameter is the turnover rate, the number of times the complete pool volume passes through the filter in a given period. The design target for residential pools in Dubai is generally a total pool volume turnover every four to six hours. Higher bather loads in commercial pools require faster turnover. To get the turnover right, the pump, the pipework, and the filter must be the right size for the pool volume. The required turnover cannot be achieved with a too small pump. If the filter is too small for the pump flow rate, the velocity through the filter medium is too high, and the effectiveness of the filter is reduced.
SAND FILTRATION: THE MOST COMMON SYSTEM
In private pools of Dubai, the most common filtration used is the sand filter. It is a pressure vessel with a bed of silica sand or other filter media through which the pool water flows. Items too large to fit between the grains of sand become lodged on top of the sand bed. The particles get trapped in the filter, and this makes it harder for fluid to flow through over time. This eventually causes the filter to bypass contaminants. Backwashing, which reverses the flow through the filter bed, is used to clean the filter. The sand is then mixed, and the material that has accumulated is loosened and washed away.
Sand filters? Maintenance workers know how to handle them and know their way around. Standard silica sand will only stop particles 25 to 40 microns in size; smaller particles will still get through. This works well for most home uses, but if you need your pool to be very clear, you may want to use a smaller filter medium. Enhanced filter media can screen out particles as small as 3 to 5 microns. Glass bead media, zeolite, and diatomaceous earth (DE) are examples of enhanced filter media. These options are increasingly used in high-end pool installations in Dubai, especially in saltwater pools where high standards are expected for the clarity of water.
CARTRIDGE FILTRATION
Another alternative to sand filtration is cartridge filters. In this process water passes through a pleated polyester filter element that captures particles. Cartridge filters provide very fine filtration (5 to 15 microns), are easy to maintain (simply remove the cartridge and hose it clean) and do not require a backwash water connection. Cartridge filters have less filter surface than sand filters of the same size and need cleaning more often. They are also more costly to operate in the long run as the cartridges need to be replaced frequently. Cartridge filters are a good solution because they don’t take up a lot of space and work well in smaller pools such as plunge pools and lap pools. For bigger pools, high-rate sand filtration with better media is normally better.
UV AND OZONE SUPPLEMENTARY TREATMENT
Beyond filtration there exist other techniques for treating water that can improve it substantially and use fewer chemicals. A UV disinfection unit works by passing a pool’s water through a chamber that exposes it to UV light to kill germs. UV light destroys bacteria, viruses, and algae cells very quickly. More importantly, it kills germs like Cryptosporidium that regular chlorine can’t kill, because they’re resistant to chlorine. UV systems reduce the chlorine demand of the pool so it can operate safely and cleanly with lower residual chlorine. Ozone treatment devices inject ozone gas into the pool water. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer. It kills any contaminants quickly and then converts to oxygen. Ozone, like UV light, reduces the need for bleach and makes the water quality much better. Ozone systems are a good alternative but need to be designed correctly so that there is no ozone gas released into the pool, which is not good for swimmers. But when installed properly, they are a useful way to improve the quality of the water. For the client who wants the best water quality and the least amount of chemicals, Green Creation can incorporate UV or ozone systems into the pool’s filter package.
THE GREEN CREATION HYDRAULIC DESIGN APPROACH
At Green Creation, engineers design our filtration systems for each project with the specific pool volume, bather load, and performance requirements in mind. The pump is sized to meet the required turnover rate with ample head pressure margins. The filtration system is selected based on the pump capacity and the required filtration quality. Pipework is sized using correct velocity and pressure drop calculations. This is an engineering discipline that guarantees that the filtration system of all Green Creation pools will work properly from day one, without the need for costly modifications after commissioning.
Don’t use trial and error or the cheapest tools to build the filtration system. When the swimming pool builders in Dubai apply the proper hydraulic engineering principles to each filter design, they build pools that maintain a high standard of water quality, consistently and economically. Green Creation puts these ideas into practice in all of our projects.
