Swimming pool construction companies and contractors in Dubai: how the build actually works
July 7, 2026Swimming pool design and renovation in Dubai: what changes value, and what changes cost
How pool design decisions and renovation scope actually affect long-term cost, safety, and resale value in Dubai villas.
Even on the same street, a pool built in 2010 and one built today will rarely look alike. Filtration technology, tile formats and edge details have moved on, and a 15-year-old pool usually needs more than a fresh coat of plaster to compete with what a new build has to offer. This article features two similar but different jobs: designing a new pool from scratch on an empty plot and refurbishing an existing one that’s beginning to show its age, crack or just fall behind on efficiency.
Green Creation has been designing and renovating pools all over Dubai for over 20 years, from new builds on villas in Al Barari to re-tiling and re-plumbing 20-year-old pools in older communities like Jumeirah Islands. Both jobs require overlapping skills but very different decision-making, and we will walk through both.
Designing a new pool: the decisions that actually matter
Shape and orientation are the most important parts, and they are more dependent upon the story than what you like. Generally a rectangle lap style looks good with a narrow side garden. If you have a view and a larger backyard, you can have a freeform or vanishing edge pool without it looking too small against the wall.
Most people don’t realise how important the depth profile of a home is. The house is 1.2 metres deep all around, which makes it ideal for families with young children and cheaper to build because it requires less digging and structural steel. The only use for a deep end over 1.8 metres is if someone in the family actually dives or swims laps. Otherwise, it’s just more expense and takes up more space without providing any real benefit.
Edge design changes the entire look of the pool. Infinity and no edges look like something out of a resort and work best if there is a view to frame it. It does require a catch basin, balancing tank and separate pump, however, all of which add to the cost of building and maintaining them over time. The standard skimmer edge is easier to install and less expensive to operate. The standard skimmer edge is usually the better choice if you don’t want to show off your view.
It costs a lot more to change decisions about filtration and circulation that are made at the design stage. Initially these pumps are more expensive than single-speed ones, but they use a lot less power in the summer in Dubai because they can run at low flow for filtering and only turn up for the heater or automatic cleaner cycle.
Lighting, heating and automation systems are easiest and cheapest to wire at the shell stage, when the wiring can be poured right into the concrete. Adding a heater or smart control system to the pool after the tiles are on means either surface-mounted conduit, which looks unappealing, or breaking into the tiles, which is expensive and never looks quite the same again.
Signs a pool needs renovation rather than routine maintenance
- Hairline cracks in the tile grout that reappear within months of being patched, which usually points to a structural or waterproofing issue underneath rather than a cosmetic one.
- Persistent cloudy water despite the correct chemical balance, often a sign the filtration system is undersized or the sand or cartridge media has reached the end of its life.
- Coping stones that have cracked, lifted, or discoloured from years of UV and chlorine exposure are also a concern.
- A pump or heater that has been repaired more than twice in two years, which is usually a sign the unit is at the end of its service life rather than genuinely fixable.
- Tile that has faded unevenly or lost its glaze, since the problem is a cosmetic issue now but tends to accelerate into water ingress later.
What a proper pool renovation covers:
A surface-only renovation replaces tile, coping and plaster or pebble finish without disturbing the structure below. This option is ideal for pools that have cosmetic wear but no underlying leaks or cracks. This process normally takes two to three weeks.
A complete renovation is more than removing old tile and re-waterproofing the shell, replacing old plumbing runs, and upgrading filtration and pump equipment toThis duration ist standards. This is the right range for a pool with an age range of 12 – 15 years, or any pool that is losing water that isn’t explained by evaporation alone.
A functional upgrade is where you add features that weren’t part of the original build: think swapping out a manual chlorine dosing system for salt chlorination, integrating automation and app control, adding a heater or extending a shallow bench area. Often these can be added as part of a surface renovation rather than a full structural strip-out.
Whatever the scope, the same rule applies as new construction: never re-tile over a shell until the waterproofing has been checked first. A renovation that neglects this step may look perfect for a year and then develop the very cracks it was intended to repair.
How Green Creation approaches design and renovation
Before we quote a client on construction for a new design, we start with a 3D render. This allows the client to see the shape, depth profile, and lighting plan in real life, set against their own garden, rather than just a picture from a catalogue. We don’t use a stock package; we match the filtration and pump equipment to the size of the pool and how it is used. This approach is one of the most common reasons that new pools end up with much higher running costs than they should be.
Before we can provide a quote for cosmetic work, the first step on any existing pool needing repairs is an inspection of the structure and the waterproofing. This way, the client knows immediately if they are looking at a two-week resurfacing job or a five-week full renovation. We refused jobs where the client wanted a quick re-tile, but we found active water ingress below. The client understands the broader scope, even if it costs more up front, since they don’t have to pay twice. Design, structural repair and finishing are all done by the same group of people. After each renovation we do a water test to ensure the job is done.
A realistic view on cost and timeline
3D renderings and engineering drawings are generally billed separately from construction for new pool design work. If the client is interested in moving forward with the build, the design work can be included in the building cost. The cost will depend on the size and extent of the renovation. For example, a surface-only job on a small residential pool is much cheaper than a total structural renovation with new plumbing and filtration on a larger pool. In both cases, get a written quote with all the details so you know what you’re paying for. And beware remodelling quotes that don’t even mention checking the waterproofing!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a vanishing edge and a standard pool edge?
A vanishing or infinity edge lets water spill over one side into a catch basin, creating the visual effect of the pool merging with the horizon. It needs a balancing tank and dedicated pump, adding cost. A standard skimmer edge is cheaper to build and run and suits pools without a view to frame.
How do I know if my pool needs a full renovation or just resurfacing?
If the issue is faded or cracked tile and there is no water loss beyond normal evaporation, resurfacing usually suffices. If you see recurring cracks after patching, cloudy water despite correct chemical balance, or water loss you can’t explain, have the waterproofing and structure checked before committing to cosmetic work.
Can I add a heater or automation system to an existing pool?
Yes, a heater or automation system can usually be added during a renovation, though it’s more cost-effective to include conduit and wiring while the tile is already being replaced rather than as a standalone retrofit later.
How long does a pool renovation take in Dubai?
A surface-only renovation typically takes two to three weeks. A full renovation involving re-waterproofing, new plumbing, and updated filtration usually takes longer, depending on the pool’s size and condition.
Does Green Creation offer 3D design before construction begins?
Yes. We provide a 3D render of the proposed pool design, including shape, depth profile, and lighting, before finalising a construction quote so clients can see the design against their own garden rather than a generic image.
Why check waterproofing before a cosmetic renovation?
Retiling over an untreated waterproofing issue often looks fine for a year before the same cracks return. Checking the shell first, even though it adds a step, avoids paying for the same renovation twice.
