Dubai is a city of big ambitions, and those ambitions are increasingly focused on sustainability. The UAE has made big promises on green energy and set a goal to be Net Zero by 2050. Saving energy, saving water, and choosing the right materials are becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. In this article we discuss the swimming pool business in Dubai. Today, pool owners who are concerned about the environment have more options than ever.
Green Creation is concerned about sustainability. The company always considers the use of energy-efficient equipment, water-saving measures, and environmentally friendly materials when designing and building pools, not just when clients request it.
THE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES OF A SWIMMING POOL
Let’s be honest about what a swimming pool does to the earth. A pool uses water, via evaporation and backwashing, and power for pumps, lighting, heating, and cooling. It uses chemicals, which are produced in factories that consume a lot of energy. In countries like the UAE where water is scarce, and all of it is produced by purification, which consumes a lot of energy, every liter counts. If not handled well, a pool can consume many of these resources. A well-built pool with the right technology and run by someone who knows what they’re doing can have a huge positive effect on the environment.
ENERGY-EFFICIENT PUMP TECHNOLOGY
The pool pump usually accounts for the most energy use of any pool operation. Traditional single-speed pumps run at full power during their cycle, no matter if the pool needs that circulation. Variable-speed pumps adjust their speed and, thus, their power consumption to the current circulation requirement at a given moment. Usually the pump is just circulating water gently to maintain water quality. A variable-speed pump can run at a fraction of its speed, drawing 70 to 80 percent less electricity than a fixed-speed pump that delivers the same daily turnover. Green Creation makes variable-speed pumps standard on all new pool installs. The energy savings over the life of the pump can be substantial—and more than offset the small additional cost of the variable-speed unit.
SOLAR ENERGY INTEGRATION
Dubai has some of the highest solar irradiance in the world, and more pools are using this resource. Solar pool heaters use receivers on the roof to collect solar energy and send it to the water in the pool. This keeps the water at a comfortable temperature during the cooler months with almost no upkeep. New technology called solar-powered chillers can be used to cool pools in the summer. Photovoltaic solar panels can power the pool’s chiller, reducing the electricity needed to cool the water.
Green Creation has designed and installed solar pool heating systems before, and they can help customers choose the best configuration for their pool and land. To make the pool as energy-efficient as possible, the company can also work with solar PV contractors.
WATER CONSERVATION: COVERS AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT
All of Dubai’s water is desalinated, which is energy-intensive, so saving water is the right thing to do, and it’s the environmentally friendly thing to do. Evaporation is the primary cause of water loss in a swimming pool. In Dubai, where it’s hot and dry, a pool can evaporate a few centimeters of water every week. The single best thing you can do to save water is to cover your pool. Having a cover over the top of the pool when it is not in use – especially at night and during the day – can reduce water loss by 80 to 90 percent. This reduces both the need for direct water top-ups and the amount of desalinated water used.
Green Creation recommends and installs automatic pool covers for customers looking to save water. The convenience of motorized covers actually makes them used. A cover that has to be pulled up by hand is often left off, defeating the purpose of the cover. Effective filter management also helps conserve water. If you backwash the filter more than necessary, you are wasting water that is used for backwashing. Smart filtration systems don’t backwash based on a schedule, but based on the pressure of the filter. This helps to avoid wasting water.
SUSTAINABLE CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT
Saltwater chlorination systems generate chlorine from salt, not from man-made chemical products. This cuts down on the chemical supply chain of pool maintenance and provides a more gentle swimming environment. Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems use germicidal UV light to treat pool water as it goes through the filtration circuit, which can greatly lower chlorine demand and let the pool run with less chemicals while still being safe. Green Creation can use UV disinfection systems instead of stronger chemical treatments, which reduces the amount of chemicals in the pool water and the impact of production and transport.
RESPONSIBLE MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
Choosing responsibly made materials, from sustainable sources, that are right for the job in the design phase reduces the overall environmental impact of constructing the pool. Green Creation selects materials according to their origins, production processes, and lifespans. We prefer materials that last for decades rather than cheap materials that we need to replace often.
A swimming pool that is beneficial for the environment is not a contradiction. A pool can be an eco-friendly, visually appealing outdoor feature that saves water and energy when it is designed correctly, outfitted with the proper tools and maintained properly. The pools are constructed by Green Creation.
